Stout is a dark beer made using roasted malt or roasted barley, hops, water and yeast. In this sense a stout is not necessarily dark in color because there are also blonde stouts. There are a number of variations including Baltic porter, dry stout and imperial stout. The name porter was first used in to describe a dark brown beer popular with street and river porters of London that had been made with roasted malts. This same beer later also became known as stout though the word stout had been used as early as The history and development of stout and porter are intertwined. This black alcoholic beverage is so called because it contains more body and nourishment than ale or beer. He who endeavors to serve, to benefit, and improve the world, is like a swimmer, who struggles against a rapid current, in a river lashed into angry waves by the winds.

See a Problem?
The exhibition title is slightly misleading: while all but two of these Renoirs are of female nudes, the sense of primary interest to him, the useful catalogue explains, was the sense of touch. Now and again, to speak frankly, we critics have our awkward moments when find ourselves unsure about how to respond generously to visually magnificent exhibitions. She has a marvelous essay in the Renoir catalogue; I wish that the curator had been bold enough to include her paintings in the show. The intelligent, always lucid catalogue is, not surprisingly defensive, and makes some attempts, vain in my opinion, to present Renoir as a politically progressive artist, even a closet feminist. He thus was, Clark, argues, very self-consciously extending tradition in a surprising way. Here, surely, Renoir anticipates the loaded brushwork of Willem de Kooning. Here, as elsewhere, the dissolving, quasi-abstract backgrounds play against the solidity of his female figures. How paradoxical, still, that these very visual pictures have become so hard to appreciate.

One of these was nude women engaged in daily activities like bathing, drying themselves, or brushing their hair. His figures are often depicted from an unusual vantage point and framed asymmetrically. Though they appear unposed, Degas collaborated closely with his models in the studio. Eventually, through continual repetition of a motif or position, he arrived at the point where he could render it from memory and experiment with the form in different configurations of space.
He had a lifelong fixation on creating scenarios and documenting how his subjects responded to their unusual circumstances, but approached what would otherwise be clinical work with a mischievous zeal. He was no methodical researcher and came upon his insights casually, if at all. One year later, he crossed town to NBC and tweaked it once more to Candid Camera , which stuck for the next six decades of broadcasts. As creator and host, Funt masterminded hundreds and hundreds of ruses, leaning on his yen for amateur psychology and sociology more and more as the years went by.
