Yoga mastery is a step-by-step path, whether it be the mastery of one exercise, one kriya, or one lifetime. Your students will experience transformation toward mastery by moving through a set of stages in their spiritual growth. Of course, not all students will come to you in the same stage. Therefore, as teachers, we need to be sensitive to the stage in which each student finds herself and the type of teaching, encouragement, and challenges that are appropriate to that stage.
A not-so-funny thing happened on my way home from Summer Solstice this year; I think I entered the state called Shakti Pad. I had spoken to many practitioners before making the trek from New Jersey to New Mexico, and I was expecting the experience to be one of pure bliss. And for many, it is. But for me, the combination of soaring expectations and not enough sleep was overwhelming. When I returned home, I spoke to my teacher about the problem and he told me about Shakti Pad, a period that many go through when they doubt the teachings. I read up on Shakti Pad and found out that meditation is the best way to get over it; that, and taking a leap of faith.
Spiritual Practice at a Plateau? You may be at Shakti Pad. Are you feeling withdrawn from your practice or from the people in your yoga community? Feeling that you have outgrown the teachings? Feeling like you are better than others? Doubting your spiritual path? Then you may be in Shakti Pad. This is a natural stage on the spiritual path. This is a very critical part as this is the fork in the road for many.
