Robert Matthew Van Winkle born October 31, , better known by his stage name Vanilla Ice , is an American rapper, actor, and television host. Although he was successful, Ice later regretted his business arrangements with SBK, which had paid him to adopt a more commercial appearance to appeal to a mass audience and published fabricated biographical information without his knowledge. After surviving a suicide attempt, Ice changed his musical style and lifestyle. While his later, less mainstream albums failed to chart or receive much radio airplay, Ice has had an underground following. After that, Ice signed to Psychopathic Records.

During his meteoric rise to fame in the early s, Vanilla Ice became the first white rapper to top the pop singles chart with his hit "Ice Ice Baby. After his fame began to fade, the rapper switched gears and became a professional jet-skier and later began appearing in reality TV shows. While he has never recaptured the success of his early days, Vanilla Ice continues to record new material. Music, however, was not his first passion. Around the age of eight, Vanilla Ice began participating in motocross races.
He was raised by his mother, Camilla Beth Dickerson. His father left when he was four years old and since then, he has had many stepfathers. He has German and English ancestry on his mother's side. In his teenage years, Robert was a poor student who got dismal grades and skipped school often. He was 18 when he was in the 10th grade, and dropped out of school. During the late 80s Ice made a living by washing cars.
